The MSD of Pike Township has recently adopted Board Policy 7540.09 beginning in the 2025-2026 school year to guide the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are committed to ensuring that when AI is used, it serves as a powerful and appropriate tool to support our staff and enhance your child's learning experience.

  • Document titled 'Student Guidance for Using AI Tools for Learning' from Pike Township.

  • Account & Tool Access
Q: Can my child create their own account for AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini?
A: No. Due to federal online privacy laws, students must be at least 13 years old to create personal accounts for most major AI platforms.

Q: How can my child under 13 use AI tools for school?
A: Students under 13 cannot create their own accounts. They may only use district-approved AI tools under the direct supervision of a teacher, often through a shared from the teacher where no personal information is shared.

Q: Can my child use any AI tool they find online for schoolwork?
A: No. To ensure student safety and data privacy, students may only use AI tools that have been reviewed and approved by the district for classroom use.

    Safety & Privacy
Q: What kind of information should my child avoid sharing with AI tools?

A: Students should never share any Personal Identifiable Information (PII). This includes their name, address, phone number, email, date of birth, or health information. A core rule for students is: "AI is not private."

Q: Who can I contact if I have questions about the AI policy or approved tools?
A: Please reach out to your child's teacher or the school administration with any questions.

    Classroom Use & Assignments
Q: Why is the district introducing AI tools?
A: Our goal is to teach students how to use AI safely, ethically, and effectively. We believe these skills are increasingly important for success in higher education and future careers.

Q: When will my child use AI tools at school?
A: Students will only use AI tools for assignments when they have received explicit permission and guidance from their teacher.

Q: How will my child know if they are allowed to use AI on a specific assignment?
A: The teacher will provide clear instructions for each assignment, specifying whether AI tools are permitted and how they may be used. This information will often be included directly in the assignment directions.

Q: Will AI be used to grade my child's work?
A: While AI may be used to provide initial feedback, a teacher will always review student work and will be the final decision-maker for all grades.

    Academic Honesty
Q: What is considered cheating or improper use of AI?

A: Submitting AI-generated work as one's own, using AI without the teacher's permission, or failing to cite AI assistance are all considered improper use and violate the district's academic honesty policy.

Q: Does the school's plagiarism policy apply to AI?
A: Yes. Presenting AI-generated work as one's own is a violation of the academic honesty policy, just like any other form of plagiarism.

Q: Does my child have to cite AI if they only use it for ideas or brainstorming?
A: Yes. Any use of an AI tool for schoolwork, including brainstorming, must be acknowledged and cited according to the teacher's instructions.
