Family Role in Digital Learning

Set up Your At-Home Digital Learning Environment

  • Set up a dedicated learning space. Keep students' work organized and in one location that will not be disturbed by others. If you are converting the kitchen table into a desk/work space, make sure to reduce the clutter around them to reduce the distractions. Try to pick a location that has natural light. Natural light can increase focus and creativity.

  • Post the student's learning schedule and stick to it. Digital learning at home should have a similar schedule as if the student were in the classroom. Set alarms or timers on your devices to let your child know when they need to be in their live class session.

  • Reduce distractions. Make a list of the things that distract your student.  Is it the game system or tablet? Maybe social media? Find ways to limit these distractions during learning time.

  • Create a classroom calendar to keep track of assignments.  Canvas has a calendar with all of your student's assignments, but it might be easier to visually see the list on the wall. Students can then cross off those assignments as they complete them and have that sense of ownership.

  • Get plenty of exercise. Take stretch breaks and brain breaks. Allow students to get up and run around for a few minutes and then refocus on learning.

  • Communicate with your student's teacher. If you find your child is experiencing challenges with digital learning, it's important for you to review the material the teacher has assigned and discuss options with their teacher. Remember: If it's a challenge for your child, it's most likely a challenge for other students, too. Digital learning takes a collaborative effort to be effective. Pike is committed to working together to achieve the best outcomes for our students.
